Miles Donovan - Analysis

Miles Donovan is a professional illustrator and a member of the PeepShow Collective. For this artwork used illustrator to create a vector portrati of the music artist. Miles has taken a picture of the music artist and with the vector pen in illustrator selected sections of the picture and colored it with values of blue to give it a stenciled spray paint effect leaving the highlights white and the other values in shades of blue, he has also added spray paint bloches in the background to futher give the illusion it was created with spray paints. I like this piece because it has stencil effect to it and it is simple to recreate using illustrator or Photoshop which has inspired me to do my own version of his work.

Blur - The Best of - Analysis

Blur are an English alternative rock band. Formed in London in 1988 as Seymour, the group consists of singer/keyboardist Damon Albarn, guitarist/singer Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree. Blur's debut album Leisure incorporated the sounds of Madchester and shoegazing

The genre of the album is Indie rock and its cover art was created by Julian Opie which creates cartoon versions of real life things in this case cartoon versions of the band members. The target audience for this type of genre seems to be mainly females from the ags of 16 - 24 year olds. The image in my opinion doesn't relate to the genre because all it has cartoon versions of the artists in the band, but i like the simplicity of the cover art because anyone with Photoshop knowledge can do it and can create their own.

The Chemical Brothers - Push The Button - Analysis

The Chemical Brothers are a British electronic music duo composed of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons. Originating in Manchester in 1991, along with The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method, and fellow acts, they were pioneers at bringing the big beat genre to the forefront of pop culture. In the UK, they have had five number-one albums and 13 top-20 singles, including two number ones.

The album's artwork has been inspired by soviet propaganda posters by the first and the font on the cover, but also the color common in soviet propaganda posters is warm colors so in order for the band not seem communist they have opted for the dull almost desaturated blue. The artist for this artwork is Tappin Gofton
who has produced the last 3 Chemical Brothers covers, not to mention Coldplay’s X&Y. They commissioned Big Active’s Kam Tang to illustrate the covers. Kam was also responsible for the latest Gnarls Barkley covers too.

The main target audience would be a male audience between 30s and 40s who mostly listen to electronic dance. The cover image in my opinion doesn't relate to the genre of electronic/dance because the common
electronic/dance covers are mainly bright and colorful with and you can clearly tell that its dance or electronic music, but this cover art i would associate with rock or heavy metal because of the simple images and dull colors and also the fist giving the impression of rebellion and power which are convention of rock and heavy metal.

Rob Ryan - Analysis

Rob Ryan is a highly acclaimed illustrator specialising in incredibly detailed paper cuts. His work is the result of the painstaking hand cutting of delicate papers. These intricate works are either sold in paper cut form or developed as limited edition screen-prints, or transferred onto a variety of media including china, fabric, jewellery and cards. In the last few years he's quietly become a household name

The paper cutting above is called "I can't forget" it seems to be a father telling a story to his son on top of tree with the branches anchoring from the border and birds siting on top of the branches. The words hang of the branches like clothes on a clothesline and gives the effect of continuous line drawing. The negative space in this artwork is the black cut out giving the illusion of a silhouette, the artist has used this space smartly so that everything is linked together to look like the branches of a tree which gives the effect of an everlasting maze of branches.

I like this artwork because of the time and effort the artist has put in to create this, it feels like a visual poem and can be used for the cover of a pop-out book. The artist has made clean cuts with close attention to detail which i admire because from my experience with paper cutting its a difficult thing to cut cleanly and still be able to link everything together.

Billie Jean - Analysis

This was created by Billie Jean. The artwork shows the 30 years of nike basketball shoes starting form 1985. The work has been created using different shades of blue biro pens. The pen allows fine detail and creates effective shade and tone using cross hatching as seen on the trainer also the pen creates a sharp, crisp outline on the detail of the shoe and shapes on the page. The artist has used the pen to ccreate different marks to fill up the page and also drawn images relating to the shoe like the basketball player underneath and basketballs on the sides. The artist has drawn images of things that link in with era of 1985 like the game "space invaders".

I like this piece of artwork because it shows you the drawing skill this artist has by making the shoe and basketball player under the shoe look photo realistic but you can also see the artist doesn't just got for realism but can create weird abstract marks to draw the attention of the audience. This piece has inspired me to try and use a pen to draw in detail to create artistic pieces and not only to write about artwork.

Geoffroy Thooren - Concept Art Analysis

Geoffroy Thoorens is a French concept artist who currently works at Quantic Dream, the developers of Heavy Rain and the upcoming Beyond: Two Souls. He's also done stuff for movies, TV shows and even board games, so the work  you see on his website is a mix of all kinds of work, ranging from landscape painting to concept art for games like RUSE and Sonic Unleashed.

Geoffroy Thoorens has used photoshop to paint this landscape using different brushes and textures to give it the effect of realism and also show the detail of the calm water. I chose this because i want to be able to get to this level of skill one day and become a concept artists my self and by seeing this type of artwork it allows me to see and learn how to create this help me get better. This piece has also inspired me by how much detail is put into the art and also has the element of realism and fantasy.

Miles Donovan - Technology Analysis

Miles Donovan is an Illustrator and member of Peepshow Collective. His work has been used
internationally for editorial and advertising clients including The New York Times, Creative Review,
Newsweek, The Guardian, The Telegraph, TIME, Wired and Qantas. You can find his illustrations in thebooks 'Illusive', 'The Fundamentals of Illustration', 'Pen and Mouse' and 'Illustration Play'. With PeepshowMiles Donovan has worked on design, art direction and animation projects for BBC, Nike, Channel Four, Philips, Toyota, Redbee Media, Diesel and The Victoria & Albert Museum.

The picture gives off the meaning of electronics being linked together andy that everything is connected some way or another. The work is in collage form allowing the  the pictures of the electronics to overlap each other

This piece is called Technology. Miles Donovan has used pictures of electronics and then with red stencils that have link with the electrical has painted in on top and behind the pictures giving it a stacked photo effect. I chose this piece because i was intrigued at how Miles Donovan used modern technology and made into art This artwork has inspired me by the style it is put together and the creativity the artist had to use the stencils as the background.

Behance HandMadeFont - Game Over Analysis

Behance is a Estonia based design company HMF (HandMadeFont). It was founded in 2008 by Vladimir Loginov and Maksim Loginov. They specialize in developing unique, untraditional fonts and take inspiration from everything that surrounds them. They are interested in requests for developing new and unique fonts for advertisement campaigns, packing, magazine covers and always open to any cooperation offers.

Their work has been published among various magazines and journals and also create different visual communication solutions for a range of clients and industries and their main projects involve art direction, branding, stationery, publications, exhibitions, websites, packaging and signage systems.
The artwork gives off the meaning of old school and how one of the first games have made a big impact in history.

I chose this piece to pin because it reminded me of the classic games back when  i was younger and the fun i had playing them with my brothers and also the technique the artist has used to create the depth and contrast of the font onto a grid board to give it authenticity and allow people to recognize the concept with the classic space invader characters.

Exam Evaluation

Interpreting the theme

My theme for this project was "Covert & Obscured" which means i had to create something that was hidden and obscured from the audiences point of view. For this project i chose to do the packaging brief which allowed me to see various designers on how they create different packaging designs. My plan for my for my final piece was to create building style packaging for bourbon biscuits and have paper cut outs on the side to see the biscuit which links with the theme.

Recording observations

I used secondary sources to get ideas on how to create my final piece and develop my ideas, websites such as TheDieline helped me see other designers work which inspired me to create something similiar that linked in with my theme. I also used my own primary photos to create my prototype net and used the photos for the surface design.

Idea development

My main idea was to create building style packaging for bourbon biscuits because of their brick like shape. In order to do this i took primary photos of buildings and bricks and created a building style net to design the photos on. I also decided to make the title of the packaging graffiti styled to give it an urban feel to it but i had to make it link in with the theme so i designed to cut outs on the side to make the bourbon biscuit covert and obscured.

Materials, Techniques and Processes

For this project i used a variety of materials to create my ideas and surface designs. To get ideas for my surface designs i used the technique called paper cutting using paper cutting tools which i done in my sketchbook. I also used photoshop to draw out designs on how i want my final piece to look like. In order to see my surface designs i had to draw out my own nets which i found difficult due to get some measurements being wrong and having to redo it untill i got it right.

Influences

My main influences have been Angus Nicholls, Lucy Hargrave and Jessica Sanchez. There work showed me how i should i approach my exam brief and the theme. Each one of them had intriqute designs which related to the product. Jessica Sanchez influenced me the most because her chocolate packaging in shape of a wardrobe/cabinet inspired me to design

Final Piece

For my final piece i intend to make a building style package for bourbon biscuits with graffiti style font and cut outs on the side to link in with the theme. I am going to use photos of bricks and buildings i took to create the background of the packaging and with spray paint get the effect of graffiti on brick to give it an urban feel and finalise everything on photoshop on to my net ready to print.

Conclusion

I found the exam theme challenging because its not a theme that relates to graphics easily but with the help of websites such as TheDieline it allowed me to get ideas and be inspired by designers doing similar projects.

I enjoyed working on my prep work because it showed me different ideas i could do for my final piece and resolve any problems i get for the final outcome.

When i complete my final outcome i think it will be happy with it and pleased that i did prep work to make it better and improve it for the exam.

In-Depth Anaylsis - Jessica Sanchez

This piece shows packaging for a chocolate brand called "Naive" and it is packaged to look like a wardrobe or filling cabinet where the chocolates represent files. This piece was created by Jessica Sanchez and published on "TheDieline"and is a freelance graphics designer but has worked for companies such as Pacific World Corporation.

The Target audience seems to be for adults by the colors used on the packaging of the chocolate wrapper and the packaging box, the use of bright colors on the side and at the center of the packet and the white box with the black logo give the effect of a sophisticated product. The logo is man ridding a one wheel cycle with the title of chocolate "Naive" under it and made with a old english text font.

There are no images used except on the logo which seems to have been created on Photoshop or illustrator.
The piece is layout like a storage unit or a wardrobe with protruding box inside the box with shelf stands to hold the chocolates in place like files or equipment.

Initial Ideas Review

1. What are your 3 initial ideas?
My first packaging idea for the bourbon biscuit was to package it in the shape of the house with a window at the side to look at biscuits inside. I created a net and then after three tries built it.

My second idea was to create a square based pyramid net wit slits on one of the sides and pile the biscuits inside like bricks.

My third idea...

2. What are you planning to do to create them?
To create my ideas i will draw the net on to card and with a blade cut out the windows and slits for the specific packaging. I will use Photoshop to create the surface design of the packaging

3. Who have you researched to develop your ideas?
I have researched Lucy Hargrave and Angus Nicholls to help me develop my ideas. Their packaging ideas have shown me different ways of how i can create packaging for foods and also there work links in with my chosen theme of obscure and covert.

4. How have you explored a range of ideas around your theme within your experiments? What are they? How have they informed your ideas?
By researching different people's packaging work it has helped me get ideas and experiment how i can create my own style. I also created mindmaps to help me get a wide range of ideas on what food i can package and find out ways to link in with my theme.

5. Have you refined/developed your ideas through experimentation? How?
My first initial idea when experimented helped me decide what the flaws were and how i could fix them by measuring the lengths of the net accurately and choosing where to put the flaps so that it will stick together and be able to stand.

6. Have you annotated, in detail, your experiments and developments in your sketchbook/blog and used this information to help you improve?

7. Which idea has been the most successful? Why?

My first initial ideas has been most successful because i like the concept of a biscuit house and how the biscuits are going to piled up like bricks
8. Which idea has been the least successful? Why?

9. Which idea do you think you will choose for your final outcome? Why?

For my final outcome i think i will choose my first initial idea because its the one i have developed the most and i like having to build a biscuit house and looking forward to create the surface design.
10. What else could you do to further develop this idea?

Look at similar products with the same packaging idea and experimenting more with different types of house nets.

Exhibition Review

1. Briefly explain the exhibition info, i.e. who was exhibiting? Where was it?
The exhibition was located in oxford circus, the building was called the Photograpthers Gallery. The theme of the exhibition was collage and how photographs are organised to create different types of collages.

2. Include photographs that you have taken yourself at the exhibitions

4. Select your 2 favorite pieces of work and write about them explaining what they were about and why you liked them

5. Select your 2 least favorite pieces of work and write about what they were about and why you didn't like them

6. Conclude with a paragraph about the overall impression of the exhibition. Did you enjoy it? Has it given you ideas and inspiration for what you might study at University? or as a career? How relevant was it to your exam project? What ideas will you take forward in your own work? etc.

In conclusion my visit to the photographers gallery was in my opinion as enjoying as i thought it would be due to the fact we had to walk up and down the stairs and stand for long periods of time. But i did enjoy the workshop at the end of the visit which helped me learn more about different collage techniques. Some of the pieces in the gallery gave me ideas on how to create different styles of collage. The techniques I learnt will help me get a variation of collage styles into my work in order to get a higher grade.

Lucy Hargrave In-Depth Analysis

The purpose of this piece is to advertise goats milk soap. The packaging was hand made and each design on the front showed the type of fragrance inside the packaging . A handmade goats milk soap company issued the piece to advertise their goats milk soap.

The target audience for this piece is mostly female customers because of there interest in perfumed soaps which some women have a collection of. Its packaging looks like it is made through a net and glued at the sides with a opening at the top. The front cover design seems to have been cut out first on the net then it was builded up. The size of the box seems average compared to other soap boxes.

The box it self is white with black font on the front to show the name of soap and its fragrance. The coloured content inside the packaging come out through the cut out shapes on the cover making it stand out. The Image or the cut out has been done with a laser cutter to allow the smell of the soap to come through. And also they used the laser cutter to print the  brand name on the side of the box.

The cut out shapes are intricate mandala designs based on natural ingredients used in each soap flavour The layout is like other soap packaging with the image of the soap and then the label underneath it.

The packaging portrays that the company like to do intricate designs and make things handmade and are unique in the designs of their packaging to intrigue their target audience.
The packaging design conveys the meaning of culture and gives the feeling of fantasy the way it designs it packaging.

I like the piece of work because it allows me to get ideas on how to create my own packaging for my project brief. It fits into the theme of "covert and obscured" and the intricate laser cut design in front of the packing gives that impression of something hidden.

In - Depth Analysis

Angus Nicholls

The purpose of this piece was to choose a existing company and choose three fruits and create suitable packaging. This was issued to students by a company for them to create an appealing packaging which would appeal to children.

The target audience of this piece was children. The artist made designed it so school children will want to buy it by using bright colours and cartoon characters in shape of the fruit they have inside.

The packaging is in a cylinder shape which wraps around the fruit inside. It connects at the back with a slot to hold it together. It looks medium sized just big enough to fit the fruit inside it.

The colour used on the characters on the front cover represent the colour of the fruit inside and the white and green background adds contrast to the shapes of the fruit.

The logo for the piece "Snack Monsters" is done a cartoon like font and is coloured the same colour as the fruit and on each letter there is black spots to give the effect of monster skin hence the name "Snack Monsters".

The images used are cartoon like characters in the form of the fruit inside the package with each one having different monster features. The images seem to have been created on illustrator or photoshop and have vibrant colours to apeal to children.

personaly i like this piece because it shows creativity and how a student can create something to look professional and be worthy to be sold. Also it helps me to get ideas on how to do my packaging design for my own brief by looking at how he created this piece.

My Chosen Brief

Final Evaluation

  1. For my project  i had to create a culture magazine that will be printed and presented as a professional looking outcome. In order to get inspiration on how to create it i looked at existing magazines and it got ideas on the layout.
  2. The ideas at the start of the project were simple and did not look professional. I had to keep going on to the Internet and searching professional looking magazines to get ideas which eventually  gave me an idea on how to create my pages. I took screen-shots to show the development of each page and how it was created . I also did some experiments in my book to help me get ideas for my logo i created which i then developed it on Photoshop.
  3. In my project i think the logo, front cover and back cover came out the best because it looks professional and looks like a real magazine. The title i created "Concept Expression" goes well with the content of the magazine showing the art of the different illustrators i have analyzed. The advert on the back cover i think turned out the best because it looks the closest to the real watch adverts and you cant tell that it was created by a student. The front cover also turned out great, i got my idea from a poster that had paint splatter so i decided to create my own version of it to create the background for my front cover using Photoshop and it the final design was effective to what i set out to do.
  4. I think i would like to improve my feature spread and my illustration page because to me it does not look exciting and to be honest looks plain and simple. to improve it i think i should add more pictures and arrange them in various ways around the page to make it look exciting and also add paint splatter to the background to go with the theme of the front cover.
  5. In conclusion i found the project interesting and allowed me to use my skills of drawing and Photoshop to create work that looked professional. In the future i would like to get more creative and be able to use a variety of tools and software to create the chosen project.
