Geoffroy Thooren - Concept Art Analysis

Geoffroy Thoorens is a French concept artist who currently works at Quantic Dream, the developers of Heavy Rain and the upcoming Beyond: Two Souls. He's also done stuff for movies, TV shows and even board games, so the work  you see on his website is a mix of all kinds of work, ranging from landscape painting to concept art for games like RUSE and Sonic Unleashed.

Geoffroy Thoorens has used photoshop to paint this landscape using different brushes and textures to give it the effect of realism and also show the detail of the calm water. I chose this because i want to be able to get to this level of skill one day and become a concept artists my self and by seeing this type of artwork it allows me to see and learn how to create this help me get better. This piece has also inspired me by how much detail is put into the art and also has the element of realism and fantasy.

Miles Donovan - Technology Analysis

The picture gives off the meaning of electronics being linked together andy that everything is connected some way or another. The work is in collage form allowing the  the pictures of the electronics to overlap each other

This piece is called Technology. Miles Donovan has used pictures of electronics and then with red stencils that have link with the electrical has painted in on top and behind the pictures giving it a stacked photo effect. I chose this piece because i was intrigued at how Miles Donovan used modern technology and made into art This artwork has inspired me by the style it is put together and the creativity the artist had to use the stencils as the background.

Behance HandMadeFont - Game Over Analysis

Behance is a Estonia based design company HMF (HandMadeFont). It was founded in 2008 by Vladimir Loginov and Maksim Loginov. They specialize in developing unique, untraditional fonts and take inspiration from everything that surrounds them. They are interested in requests for developing new and unique fonts for advertisement campaigns, packing, magazine covers and always open to any cooperation offers.

Their work has been published among various magazines and journals and also create different visual communication solutions for a range of clients and industries and their main projects involve art direction, branding, stationery, publications, exhibitions, websites, packaging and signage systems.
The artwork gives off the meaning of old school and how one of the first games have made a big impact in history.

I chose this piece to pin because it reminded me of the classic games back when  i was younger and the fun i had playing them with my brothers and also the technique the artist has used to create the depth and contrast of the font onto a grid board to give it authenticity and allow people to recognize the concept with the classic space invader characters.

Exam Evaluation

Interpreting the theme

My theme for this project was "Covert & Obscured" which means i had to create something that was hidden and obscured from the audiences point of view. For this project i chose to do the packaging brief which allowed me to see various designers on how they create different packaging designs. My plan for my for my final piece was to create building style packaging for bourbon biscuits and have paper cut outs on the side to see the biscuit which links with the theme.

Recording observations

I used secondary sources to get ideas on how to create my final piece and develop my ideas, websites such as TheDieline helped me see other designers work which inspired me to create something similiar that linked in with my theme. I also used my own primary photos to create my prototype net and used the photos for the surface design.

Idea development

My main idea was to create building style packaging for bourbon biscuits because of their brick like shape. In order to do this i took primary photos of buildings and bricks and created a building style net to design the photos on. I also decided to make the title of the packaging graffiti styled to give it an urban feel to it but i had to make it link in with the theme so i designed to cut outs on the side to make the bourbon biscuit covert and obscured.

Materials, Techniques and Processes

For this project i used a variety of materials to create my ideas and surface designs. To get ideas for my surface designs i used the technique called paper cutting using paper cutting tools which i done in my sketchbook. I also used photoshop to draw out designs on how i want my final piece to look like. In order to see my surface designs i had to draw out my own nets which i found difficult due to get some measurements being wrong and having to redo it untill i got it right.

Influences

My main influences have been Angus Nicholls, Lucy Hargrave and Jessica Sanchez. There work showed me how i should i approach my exam brief and the theme. Each one of them had intriqute designs which related to the product. Jessica Sanchez influenced me the most because her chocolate packaging in shape of a wardrobe/cabinet inspired me to design

Final Piece

For my final piece i intend to make a building style package for bourbon biscuits with graffiti style font and cut outs on the side to link in with the theme. I am going to use photos of bricks and buildings i took to create the background of the packaging and with spray paint get the effect of graffiti on brick to give it an urban feel and finalise everything on photoshop on to my net ready to print.

Conclusion

I found the exam theme challenging because its not a theme that relates to graphics easily but with the help of websites such as TheDieline it allowed me to get ideas and be inspired by designers doing similar projects.

I enjoyed working on my prep work because it showed me different ideas i could do for my final piece and resolve any problems i get for the final outcome.

When i complete my final outcome i think it will be happy with it and pleased that i did prep work to make it better and improve it for the exam.
